Proud Alumna, Long-Time Resident & Engaged Parent Running for Independence School Board

Why I'm running for INDEPENDENCE SCHOOL BOARD

I’m Kathleen M. Vijaywergiya, a proud graduate of Independence High School, a parent of two IHS alumni, and a passionate advocate for student success and opportunity.

I’m running for school board because I believe in giving back to the district that shaped my life and my children’s futures. I know firsthand the power of education to open doors and I want to empower the students of the Independence School District.

Our schools are at the heart of our community. With your support, I’ll work to strengthen them for the next generation!

ABOUT ME

It's pronounced "Vee-jay-were-gee-ya." I know, it’s a bit of a mouthful! But here’s the good thing: you don’t have to say it perfectly to know what I stand for. I’m here to bring fresh ideas, energy, and commitment, which is a whole lot easier to remember than how to spell (or say) my last name!

With a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and an MBA, I’ve built a career grounded in critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration—skills I believe are essential in today’s world and should be nurtured in every student. I’ve dedicated the last two decades to serving youth in both my local community and nationally. That includes over 10 years as Committee Secretary for Scouts Troop 297, five years on the Independence Music Boosters executive board (including three as President), and three years as Secretary of the IHS PTO. I’ve also served for eight years as a national board member of Phi Sigma Rho, an engineering sorority focused on supporting women in STEM.

Now retired from these volunteer roles, I’m ready to bring my energy, leadership, and perspective to the school board. I am especially committed to ensuring that Independence students are well-prepared for the future—with strong academic foundations, exposure to STEAM fields, and opportunities to thrive no matter their path.
